RF Front End Evaluation Kit

The EB1006A is an easy to use evaluation kit that is able to test the performance of the NemeriX GPS RF front end chip NJ1006A in conjunction with a separate base-band processor. The NJ1006A Evaluation Kit includes the evaluation board EB1006A and its interface board IB1000B.

The evaluation kit includes the schematics and layouts of the EB1006A evaluation board. Comprehensive support is also provided through the highly-experienced NemeriX application team. The application support team will be able to assist in the evaluation process and also provide advice on the hardware design process. This will include providing suggested guidelines for your development work as well as reviewing schematics and layouts throughout the whole hardware development phase. Support will extend to bringing up and tuning of your NemeriX-based manufactured boards.

EB1006A (datasheet)

The EB1006A is an evaluation board for the NJ1006A RF front-end for GPS receivers. It is a self-contained RF receiver built around the NJ1006A and provides a quick and easy way to evaluate the NJ1006A in a GPS application. This evaluation board is intended to support evaluation of the NJ1006A receiver performance in conjunction with a separate base-band processor. The main characteristics are:

  • All external components required by the NJ1006A - including the filters and the crystal resonator - are provided on the EB1006A.
  • A simple digital interface allows direct interfacing of the EB1006A to GPS processors from various manufacturers.
  • The EB1006A is available either with female SMA connector or a patch antenna directly mounted on the rear side of the board.
  • Various frequencies for the reference clock are available. The clock signal may be either generated on board or supplied externally.
  • Evaluation requires a GPS base-band processor board with a compatible frequency plan.
  • The EB1006A uses a small two-layer PCB layout. A shield is included with the EB1006A and should be used, especially if a noisy environment is anticipated. The shield is not mounted to allow an easy inspection of the board or to simplify making modifications if desired.
  • Low power complete RF front end (<18mW fully active).

IB1000B (datasheet)

The digital outputs of the EB1006A are quite weak and are intended to drive only low-capacitance inputs. This interface board IB1000B with digital buffers is an easy way to connect the evaluation board to custom base-band devices requiring more drive, such as an FPGA or DSP processor. The main characteristics are:

  • It provides buffered inputs and outputs, its purpose is to simplify the connection of the EB1006A to external GPS baseband processors.
  • The power supply necessary for the operation of the EB1006A is generated on-board. It is regulated to 3.1 V from an unregulated 3.5-16 V input power source.
  • The digital output signals SGN, MAG and CP of the EB1006A are buffered, so that longer connection cables or relatively large capacitive loads may be driven without overloading the EB1006A.
  • The IB1000B may also be configured in such a way that CP becomes a buffered input to the EB1006A.
